Open Letter to Evergreen Administration and Community re: Bias Incident Response to Recent Graffiti

Disclaimer: I am uninvolved with this situation, know nothing about it beyond having seen a couple of the messages painted on campus, etc. Just the same, this blanket statement caused me some concern so I thought I’d take a sec to bring this before the community for discussion. TL;DR summation below abbreviated philosophical rant to follow:

I’m confused. Is Systemic Power being willfully ignored here? As far as I understand, sexism happens like: male->female / cis->trans / binary->non-binary, right?

And isn’t ”sex-based discrimination” a legal term used to refer to real estate, employment, access to public services such as classrooms, restrooms, etc? Don’t men—especially men who either were assigned male at birth or appear as such (I include myself in the second category)—stand to benefit from what Dean Spade described as “supposedly neutral systems” that uphold ablism, ageism, classism, racism, sexism, etc?

What male in these categories who has not excluded himself or been excluded from access to this college via his own behavior or ablism/classism/racism is being denied classes, counseling, food, health services, etc by this graffiti?

Given Evergreen’s shortfalls—both historically and in the present year—around administrative response and policy concerning sexual and intimate partner violence, coupled with the preponderance of statistics concerning violence perpetrated by men, I am confused as to why this is seen as an event warranting response by the Bias Incident Team.

Perhaps part of my confusion centers around the difference between metonymic power of the words and references used. For instance, I perceive a connection between “Kill your boyfriend” and “Kill Your Television” (image here: http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs51/f/2009/267/9/d/Kill_Your_TV_by_HandsettBattery.jpg , cultural context example here: http://whole9life.com/2011/04/kill-your-tv/ ) that removes any literal sense of instruction. Of course, I can’t know for sure the thoughts of the persyn/persyns committing these acts, even if I knew who they were.

Is this or is this not a university rooted in social justice perspectives? If not, our reputation is unfounded and perhaps I should be examining the false pretenses under which I was attracted to this college.

TLDR version: I don’t think this qualifies as a Bias Crime because men still take up so much space/hold so much power in society and the existence of this graffiti does not to my knowledge cost anyone essential access, needs or safety—except perhaps the persyn/s who painted it based on response from administration in its myriad forms.
